Think Ahead to Fall

If you enjoy dark greens like spinach, collards and broccoli you can still plant them up until August according to The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company. Even late-season lettuce can take the cold. Also good to plant now and harvest after the first frost are root vegetables.

This recipe, perfect for combining fall apple picking with your fall vegetable garden is from CDKitchen.com:

Broccoli Waldorf Salad

large head broccoli florets cooked and separated

large red apple unpeeled, chopped in small pieces

1 stalk of celery chopped

1/4 of a red onion chopped fine

1/2 cup chopped pecans

1/2 cup light raisins

1 cup crumbled soft style blue cheese

mayonnaise

salt and pepper

Combine all the ingredients binding together with mayonnaise. Season to taste. Best served the same day, but can be kept 24 hours.
